The Irish under-23 national badminton championships took
place on Saturday in Ramsgrange Community School in county Wexford. The
cream of Ireland’s youthful badminton talent made the long trip to the model
county to try and create their own unique piece of history and enter the
records books as the first ever winners of the inaugural event. There was
also the added incentive of endeavouring to secure places on the Irish
under-23 international team to face Norway in Lisburn on Friday next.
It was the 1st ever national badminton
championships to take place in the model county and the competition had
generated considerable interest in the local media and among Wexford
badminton supporters. The championship itself was dominated by Ulster and
Leinster players, but it was the Northern Province who secured a clean sweep
of all five titles including double honours for Erin Keery and Matthew
Gleave. The only non Ulster player on the winner’s podium was Ronan Magee
(Leinster) who partnered Matthew Gleave to victory in a classic men’s
doubles final.
