Wexford win 3rd in a row Class-2 title In the class 2 final Wexford faced mid-land rivals Laois in a bid to retain their title. Laura Butler got the ball rolling when she had an impressive 11/2, 11/2 victory over Sharon Cobbe. Ross McNiven recovered quickly from his class one defeat to overcome Wayne Carter 15/5, 15/10 and Wexford were half-way to retaining their title. Alan Carton and Colm Byrne edged them even closer when they won the men’s doubles in straight sets 15/7, 15/8 against Mark and Alan Cobbe. Laois were not yet finished however and they reduced the deficit when Lorraine Hill and Sharon Cobbe defeated Deirdre Kehoe and Brideen Lynch 9/15, 15/8, 15/10. There was only a point between the teams when Lorraine Hill and Mark Cobbe won the opening mixed doubles match 15/10, 16/17, 15/2 against Deirdre Kehoe and Ross McNiven. That was as near as Wexford allowed Laois to get however as Brideen Lynch and Colm Byrne won the 2nd mixed doubles game 15/9, 15/6 against Sharon Cobbe and Wayne Carter to secure the title and a Wexford double. |
