Wexford’s had four teams competing in the
Leinster Inter-county veterans championships which were held in the
impressive twelve court Aer-Lingus sports centre on Sunday last. The
model county teams dominated proceedings with victories in the “B” and “C”
categories and a narrow defeat in the “A” section. In the top grade
the Wexford team of Brideen Lynch, Ellen O’Neill, Pat Lynch and Seamus
Creane lost out to Fingal by a single point despite remaining unbeaten in
both their games. The Wexford side began with a 2-2 draw against the
Dublin Borough and followed this up with a similar score line against local
rivals Kilkenny. Unfortunately after a marathon encounter between
Fingal and Kilkenny the Dublin side took the final mixed doubles game to
give them a 3-1 victory. The win was enough to secure a first ever
title for Fingal with the Wexford quartet forced to settle for 2nd spot.
In the B-Grade Wexford started in impressive fashion with a 4-0 victory over
Fingal. This was followed up with an equally impressive 4-0 success
over a strong Kilkenny side, a result that meant Wexford needed a draw in
their final game against Wicklow to claim the title. Wexford started
well with Miriam Butler and Jennifer Sinnott winning the ladies doubles, but
Wicklow hit back by taking a marathon men’s doubles encounter in three sets
to tie the match at 1-1. The destination of the title now depended on the
outcome of the two mixed doubles games and it was secured by the first mixed
doubles pairing of team captain Miriam Butler and John Joe Murphy. The
full team was: Miriam Butler (Capt), Jennifer Sinnott, Helen Butler,
John Joe Murphy and Seamus Redmond. Wexford had two teams in the
C-category, but the 2nd team started poorly and lost their opening game 3-1
to Wicklow. Wexford’s success came in the ladies doubles where Olive
Waters and Betty Kelly had a fine victory over a strong Wicklow combination.
The Wexford 1st team were spectators for the opening round but now faced the
2nd team with the prize on offer being a place in the final against Wicklow.
The 1st team proved the superior side in the clash winning all games bar 2nd
mixed doubles where Ger Turner and Olive Waters defeated Ray Kent and Dympna
Molloy. The final against a fine Wicklow side was a close and tense
encounter which was watched closely by the large Wexford and Wicklow squads
present for the competitions. Wicklow struck the first blow by winning
the ladies doubles, but Wexford were level when Eddie and Ray Kent took the
men’s doubles. Ray Kent and Dympna Molloy dominated the 2nd mixed
doubles encounter and won comfortably in straight sets, but Wicklow were a
set up in the opening 1st mixed game where Eddie Kent and Shirley Doyle
narrowly lost 17/14. A 2-2 draw looked a possible outcome, but the
Wexford pairing raised their game and gaps were appearing on court that were
not there in the opening set. The Wexford pairing slowly began to gain the
upper hand and took the 2nd and 3rd sets to give Wexford their 2nd title of
the day on a 3-1 score line.
